ABB Partners With SSAB To Electrify Sweden’s Fossil-Free Steel Mill
Chia sẻ
Global technology leader ABB has joined forces with Swedish steelmaker SSAB to electrify SSAB’s new fossil-free steel mill in Luleå. The partnership aims to build the core electrical infrastructure that will power the plant’s transition from traditional fossil-fuel steelmaking to a low-carbon model.
Driving a Low-Carbon Steel Future
ABB will deliver and commission the plant’s primary power systems, including transformers, switchgear, and distribution networks. These systems will support high-intensity processes such as electric arc furnaces, replacing conventional blast-furnace methods. By providing end-to-end electrification solutions, ABB ensures reliable energy delivery while enabling SSAB to achieve its sustainability goals.
The Luleå facility represents a milestone in SSAB’s strategy to eliminate fossil fuels from core steel production. Once operational, it is expected to significantly reduce carbon emissions, contributing to Sweden’s broader climate targets and setting a benchmark for clean steel production worldwide.
Strengthening the Partnership
ABB’s early engagement in electrification planning brings deep expertise in large-scale power integration, allowing SSAB to align energy strategy with ambitious environmental targets. This collaboration builds on a long-standing partnership, cementing ABB’s role as a trusted technology partner in SSAB’s transformation.
Beyond electrification, SSAB continues to explore innovative methods, including hydrogen-based iron reduction, to replace coal and coke with renewable electricity and hydrogen. These advances further cut lifecycle emissions and accelerate the company’s shift to sustainable steel.
Turning Ambition into Reality
As the Luleå mill comes online, conventional steelmaking infrastructure will gradually be phased out. The combination of advanced electrical systems and modern processes will enable cleaner production, reduce fossil fuel dependence, and strengthen SSAB’s position in the sustainable materials market.
Executives from both companies emphasize the project’s significance: a major step toward net-zero emissions for SSAB, and a demonstration of ABB’s commitment to industrial decarbonization through electrification and digital innovation.
