BlackBerry's QNX Is Betting That Robots — Not Cars — Will Be Its Next Gold Mine

Ask anyone old enough to remember the early 2000s what BlackBerry means, and they'll probably describe a tiny keyboard, a blinking red light, and the addictive click-clack of thumb-typing at 2 a.m. Those days are ancient history. The company hasn't made a phone in years. But here's the twist: BlackBerry is back — and its stock has more than doubled in 2026.

The comeback kid isn't selling hardware anymore. It's selling QNX, a "safety-critical" operating system that already runs inside 275 million vehicles worldwide. Think braking systems, semi-autonomous driving features, the invisible software that keeps cars from doing anything stupid. That's the foundation. Now BlackBerry wants to build something bigger on top of it.

CEO John Giamatteo told CNBC that robotics has quietly become one of the fastest-growing segments inside the QNX portfolio. Not the flashy humanoid robots you see on TikTok — he's talking about the unglamorous but wildly practical kind: warehouse robots, robotic forklifts, surgical instruments, industrial automation. The kind of machines that actually work for a living.

Why does QNX have an edge here? Because building software for a car's braking system and building software for a factory robot share one brutal requirement: failure is not an option. Consumer apps can crash and reboot. Nobody dies. But when a robot shares a warehouse floor with human workers, or a surgical device is inside a patient, the software underneath has to be certified, predictable, and bulletproof. That certification takes years to earn. QNX already has it.

The numbers tell the story. BlackBerry is sitting on a $950 million QNX order backlog, and robotics accounts for a meaningful chunk of that. In April, the company deepened its partnership with Nvidia to deploy QNX alongside Nvidia's systems in robotics and medical tech.

"Robotics is going to shift in a hardcore way," Giamatteo said. And BlackBerry, the company that defined mobile communication a generation ago, is quietly positioning itself to define something else entirely: the operating system that makes physical AI actually safe enough to trust.

Not bad for a company that stopped making keyboards years ago.
