Holiday Notice: Dragon Boat Festival – June 19

To our valued customers and partners,

Our office will be closed on Friday, June 19, in observance of the Dragon Boat Festival, a traditional Chinese holiday with a history of more than 2,000 years. Normal operations will resume on Monday, June 22.

But what exactly is the Dragon Boat Festival, and why do people celebrate it with sticky rice and racing boats?

A Quick Look Back

The festival honors Qu Yuan – a beloved poet and loyal minister of the ancient state of Chu (circa 340–278 BCE). When he saw his kingdom fall to corruption, Qu Yuan drowned himself in the Miluo River as a final act of protest. Local villagers raced out in their boats, beating drums and splashing the water with paddles to scare away fish and evil spirits, hoping to save his body or at least keep it from harm. To feed his spirit, they threw bundles of cooked rice into the river.

That legend gave birth to two of the festival’s most famous traditions:

Dragon boat racing – Teams paddle long, ornately carved boats to the rhythmic beat of a drum. It’s a thrilling, heart‑pumping sport that now takes place in cities around the world.

Zongzi – Glutinous rice stuffed with fillings like pork, beans, or red dates, wrapped in bamboo or reed leaves, and steamed or boiled. Think of it as a sweet or savory package of history you can eat.

Other customs include hanging bundles of calamus and mugwort leaves above doors to ward off disease, drinking realgar wine (a traditional but now seldom‑consumed protective brew), and wearing perfumed sachets to keep insects away.
